Don’t Let Scammers Trick You into Sending Money
Fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to trick consumers, and one of the latest scams involves criminals pretending to be Cash App customer support. White Rose Credit Union wants to help keep our members informed and protected by raising awareness about this growing fraud trend.
How the Scam Works
Scammers contact individuals by phone, text message, email, social media, or even through pop-up messages claiming to represent Cash App support. They often tell victims that there is a problem with their account, that funds are locked, or that suspicious activity has occurred.
To “fix” the problem, the scammer may demand that the victim:
- Purchase gift cards and provide the card numbers
- Send a wire transfer
- Buy cryptocurrency
- Transfer money to another account
- Share account information, passwords, PINs, or verification codes
Scammers often create a false sense of urgency, pressuring victims to act immediately before they have time to think or verify the request.
Know the Warning Signs
It is important to remember that legitimate businesses and financial institutions do not require payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency to provide support or resolve account issues.
If someone contacts you and asks for any of these forms of payment, it is a major red flag.
Be especially cautious if the person:
- Pressures you to act immediately
- Tells you to keep the situation secret
- Requests gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency
- Asks for account credentials, card numbers, PINs, or verification codes
- Contacts you unexpectedly about an account problem
How to Protect Yourself
Before responding to any unexpected request involving money or personal information:
- Pause and verify. Don’t react to urgent demands.
- Use trusted contact information. Do not call phone numbers or click links provided in suspicious messages.
- Contact the company directly. Use the official website or mobile app to verify the request.
- Never share sensitive information. Legitimate organizations will not ask for passwords, security codes, or PINs.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is.
